甲骨文“册”字为象形字，竖笔代表竹（木）简，竹（木）简数量不一，少则三四条，多则五六条；中部的曲笔表示把竹（木）简贯连起来的绳子或皮条。

　　The　oracle　bone script form of the Chinese character “册” （cè） is a pictograph. Its vertical stroke represents bamboo （or wooden） slips，with the number of slips varying from three or four to five or six. Its curved stroke in the middle symbolizes the rope or leather strip used to bind the bamboo （or wooden） slips together.　　  （文字翻译 童林　张蕊）
