The Chinese character “龋” (qǔ, denoting dental caries) in oracle bone script is a pictographic compound: it consists of the character “虫” (chóng, denoting worm) burrowing into the character “齿” (chǐ, denoting tooth). As early as the Yin-Shang Period, our ancestors had already developed a basic understanding of dental caries. They believed that tooth cavities were caused by worms in the mouth, which is the origin of the Chinese colloquial term “虫牙” (chóngyá, literally “worm tooth”, for decayed teeth).
